HOLIDAYS & LEISURE TRAVEL: PM Liz Truss has sacked Grant Shapps and named Anne-Marie Trevelyan as transport secretary… InterContinental Hotels Group has announced a breach of its technology systems, saying that its ‘booking channels and other applications have been significantly disrupted since yesterday, and this is ongoing.’ The company adds that it ‘has implemented its response plans, is notifying relevant regulatory authorities and is working closely with its technology suppliers. External specialists have also been engaged to investigate the incident…’ The UK fell from fifth on the world tourism rankings to ninth in 2021, making it the biggest faller of the top ten countries… Travel Weekly reports that demand for 2023 Princess Cruises sailings is ‘well outstripping’ previous years. Camelot has dropped its legal challenge against the handover of the National Lottery to rival Allwyn… FINANCE & MARKETS: S&P Markit has released construction PMI numbers for the UK in August saying that ‘construction activity in the UK dipped for the second successive month in August as customer demand moved closer to stagnation amid cost pressures and economic uncertainty.’ The number came in at 49.2, up on July’s 48.9 but still in contraction territory… • See premium. Interesting reaction to PM Liz Truss’s first comments on the international markets with Sterling weak and interest rates rising, presumably in the belief that UK debt will shortly be sharply on the rise. Sterling down at $1.1477 and €1.1595. Oil lower at $91.36. UK 10yr gilt yield through 3% for the first time in more than a decade (up 11bps) at 3.05%. World markets mixed but heading down yesterday and London set to open some 59pts lower as at 6.30am. FORTHCOMING NEWS: A gentle run in before it becomes noticeably busier later in the month.
