Energy costs, tied tenants, beer, Pret a Manger, easyHotel & other:A DAY IN THE LIFE: Well, it has rained a bit this week and, when I last checked, water was dripping from the garage roof’s guttering into the oil drum that we use as a water butt. Which is great but, as they say, a watched pot never boils and, as I can attest, a watched oil drum doesn’t fill with water. At least not very quickly. And shouting at it doesn’t help so I did the maths. There are about 20,000 drops of water in a litre and about 159 litres in a standard, 35 gallon barrel and, as the water was cascading into it at about two drops a second, that means the thing would take about two and a half weeks to fill up and that’s if it rained solidly the whole time. Which is about two and a half weeks longer than I was prepared to stand there watching it so, I can either ignore the problem or clean out the guttering a bit to give it a chance. Or, as it’s virtually the weekend, I could open a beer and resign myself to watching the plants wilt the next time the sun shines.
